Anthony Joshua’s corner gave their fighter ‘dangerous advice’ just moments before he was knocked out by Daniel Dubois on Saturday night.

Dubois turned in stunning performance at Wembley Stadium, defending the IBF heavyweight title after knocking out Joshua in the fifth round.

The former Olympic champion was sent to the canvas in the opening round by a monstrous right hand, hitting the deck again in the third and fourth.

Joshua mounted a brief comeback in the fifth with a huge overhand right catching the Londoner clean. Dubois’ response was brutal, landing another right that Joshua in a heap and sealed the win.

BBC Radio Five Live picked up what Joshua was told by his corner, led by head trainer Ben Davison, moments before he went back out for that decisive fifth round.

Joshua was told: ‘If there’s a bit of a lull, in behind that double jab, bring it up. Roll the dice. He’ll duck under the right hand, lift it yeah. Roll the dice.’

McGuigan, who trained Dubois between 2021 and 2023, was part of Five Live’s commentary team on the night. Upon hearing the advice dished out by Joshua’s team, the trainergave a scarily accurate prediction of what was to come – calling the exact punch from Dubois that would end the fight.

‘I think that’s dangerous advice there to be honest,’ McGuigan said in between the rounds.

‘Getting him to bring him up off the double jab, Daniel throws that right hand straight off that double jab.

‘And by bringing it up he means an uppercut, he’s going to walk himself straight onto his short right hand.

‘If you ask me I would say keep your hands up tight and get through these next two rounds and then use your athleticism late down the stretch.’

McGuigan’s analysis proved to be spot on, with Dubois ruthlessly dispatching Joshua with a short right hand moments later.
